Top 10 online cures for boredom

by: Braidyn Browning

We all need to take a break every now and again. Whether you’re on lunch or looking to kill some time on the weekend, there’s an internet for that. We’ve collected our top 10 internet time wasters to cure your ever looming boredom. These sites, games and videos are totally subjective and honestly...some of them are pretty nerdy. We HIGHLY encourage you to browse around and find things that cater more to your boredom tastes. However, we personally believe that this is an awesome place to start.

  1. 1. Be My Eyes App

This app offers the highest form of good use of spare time. The Be My Eyes App connects visually impaired individuals with “sighted” individuals. This app gives those who can see a chance to assist those who can not. Through video chat, volunteers are able to help visually impaired individuals with anything they may need. From choosing the correct color socks to getting on the correct subway train, volunteers are able to help with it all.

The app has raving reviews from over 1,400 users and possesses an impressive 1,607,888 sighted volunteers.
Some volunteers report that they did not receive their first phone call for months after downloading the app. The creators of the app report that this is amazing as it's a result of the overwhelming amount of volunteers they've gained. Though it may take a while, the volunteer reviews of the app make it clear that it is worth the wait.

What better way to spend your extra time?

  1. 2. Fandom Sites such as Pottermore and Wookieepedia

We’ll take it down a notch on the serious scale here. All of you hardcore Harry Potter fans out there probably think this website is old news. But for anyone who hasn’t visited this wonderful website before, you’re in for a treat. One of our favorite past times is having coworkers/friends sign up for an account and take their sorting hat quiz. Try not to get lost in the endless articles, behind the scenes content and endless quizzes.

Wookieepedia is an entire wiki encyclopedia for everything StarWars. Similarly to Pottermore, you can find online games, articles and sneak peak content on all upcoming and past Star Wars movies, events, etc.

  1. 3. TED Talks

TED Talks have been plucking at people’s heartstrings since 1984. These videos are a classic go to for business owners and average joes alike. Whether you are looking to find some personal growth or you are researching a high impact topic, TED Talks offer insights into a variety of subjects. Speakers generally bring firm authority to their talk (usually having years of experience in the technical topics) but we’ve seen everyday people giving talks as well.

4. Jubilee

According to their YouTube channel, “Jubilee Media exists to bridge people together and inspire love through compelling stories. We create shareable human-centric videos that create connection, challenge assumptions, and touch the soul.” The channel has quite a few heart warming video and video series but our personal favorite is the “Middle Ground” series. In this set of videos, people from opposing beliefs sit down with one another to discuss and hear each other out. Each video is guided with prodding and polarizing questions. Participants take turns speaking and all in all, the conversations seem very civil and respectful, a rarity in today’s age. Check out our personal favorite video here.

5. News and Techy Sites
Sites like Techcrunch, Mashable, The Verge are sure to keep you up to date with the latest trends, product launches and reviews. Each of them bring something a little different to the table but we like to ingest a good mixes of pop culture, news and techy info.

6. The Onion
The Onion has been around for years and is primarily known as a comedic news site. It has become more important than ever to be able to laugh about certain current events and issues. If you’re looking to take a break from the doom and gloom, this is the site for you.

7. The Google Chrome Dinosaur Game
It’s an oldie but a goodie but we’re suckers for a rousing Dinosaur game after a network error. Once upon a time, you had to wait for Google Chrome to experience a error in order to get a chance to play this bad boy but NO MORE! You can now copy and paste chrome://network-error/-106 into your browser and game on.

8. RedBubble
Redbubble is an Etsy of sorts but a little cooler (in our opinion). The site offers all of the same things like clothing, phone cases, stickers, wall art, home decor, etc. from independent artists. However, we’ve found that RedBubble offers more in the way of nerdy attire and decor. Ten out of ten, would recommend.

9. Duolingo
Learn a language while you’re bored! Duolingo offers videos, quizzes and microphone capability so you can practice vocally. The service is free and offers 20+ languages. We've personally tried to learn German, Spanish and French but you could also go for High Valyrian or Klingon. Also... just look at how cute their mascot is. LOOK AT IT!

If you're telling us you can resist THAT FACE.... you're lying.

10. Bowman Game has a TON of could kill time games but this one is by far our favorite. Bowman goes way back and has since developed a 2nd version. The rules of the game are simple; draw…. Shoot. In “VS Human” mode, you can take turns shooting at a friend. Get the highest amount of kill shots in or get one good headshot in to win the match. The same rules apply to “VS Computer” games. You can also practice your craft by shooting innocent birds passing by.

Again, we’re offering these sites, videos and games as a jumping off point. Get out there and find what works for you. The internet is a beautiful, beautiful melting pot of boredom cures and oddities.
